SU (Scripture Union) in Peru, headed up by Paul Clarke, works amongst street children. In Lima, children can come and be fed at a centre for street kids, called ‘Girasoles’. The centre runs various activities for them and also runs a bakery, which provides some income and gives street boys the opportunity to learn a trade.
In Iquitos, up in the rainforest of the Amazon, St. Mary’s supports a shoemaking project. Much like the bakery in Lima it is an opportunity for boys to learn a trade and to become self-sufficient.
Near Iquitos, in the middle of the jungle, is a centre called ‘Puerto Alegria’. Children go to this centre to get away from the streets and to rebuild their lives, to have a basic education and to be cared for.
