Rowena Pullinger grew up in St. Mary’s and is now working in London with Grandma’s, an organisation working with AIDS victims and their families.
Four years after starting her work with Grandma’s, God has called her to move to East London and be the one starting up and leading a new branch of Grandma’s there.
This meant moving house, doing a lot of initial prayer work, establishing relationships with churches in the area and training for volunteers, in addition to maintaining the work that already exists there (16 volunteers visiting 50 families).
Grandma’s is a Christian Charity which aims to provide practical response to the growing number of children and families affected by HIV / AIDS. The aim of Grandma’s is to take the love and compassion of Jesus into these families practically in order to keep them together for as long as possible.
The charity depends on volunteers who offer services such as babysitting, playtime for the children, help at hospital appointments, outings and so on.
Grandma’s started in 1990 with four families and since then has received 400 referrals. The work continues to grow, as does the team of trained staff and volunteers who work with the families on a regular basis.
